Chapter 01
Gutters get sized to the roof, not the fascia
A gutter that matches the length of fascia board on the house is sized to the wrong thing. What actually loads a gutter is the square footage of roof draining into it, plus how hard North Texas rain falls once a storm cell sits over Grapevine. Undersize the run and the water finds the fascia, the soffit and eventually the framing behind them, long before anyone notices a leak inside the house.
We work out gutter and downspout sizing off the roof area that feeds each run, not off habit or whatever was there before. A downspout in the wrong place moves the same failure six feet closer to the foundation instead of solving it.

Siding and windows are a water path, not a finish
Siding and window trim are the part everyone looks at, but the part that decides whether the wall stays dry is the flashing behind them: the metal and membrane that carry water past every seam, corner and window head instead of letting it wick into the sheathing. Cladding is the finish. Flashing is the job.
When we replace siding or windows we rebuild that water path first, tie it into the existing wall assembly correctly, and only then set the visible material. A house can have brand-new siding and still leak, if what is underneath it was never redone.
Chapter 03
Fencing, garages and retaining walls are the same drainage problem in a different material
A fence post that heaves out of blackland clay, a garage slab that cracks at the door, and a retaining wall that bows outward are usually the same story: water with nowhere to go, working against something set in the ground. Wood, concrete and stone each fail differently, but the cause is almost always drainage that was never planned for.
We grade and drain a fence line, a garage approach or a retaining wall before we set anything permanent in the ground, so the structure is fighting gravity instead of standing water.
